The Covid pandemic created a huge increase in on-line shopping to 37.8% of all retail buying in January 2021.
This fell back to 27.7 in August, followed by a pre-Christmas peak of 32.8% in November 2021.
Through 2022 it fell back to 24.6% in August and is now climbing again to another pre-Christmas peak already reaching 26% in October.
So, a pattern is emerging of approximately 33% of Christmas shopping being done on-line and for the rest of the year it runs at approximately 25%.
These are statistics produced by the Office of National Statistics.
So on-line shopping is here to stay and represents a significant volume of business throughout the year.
So do you need to Transform your logistics Business to cope?
If you do then before you decide what and how, it would be a very good idea to bring in a third party who has decades of experience in this area.
Over the last few decades, the Logistics Improvement Group (LiG) has conducted large and small projects and developed a sound methodology to ensure that all key steps are properly thought out and undertaken correctly.
With their long experience and depth of knowledge LiG are able to assess each situation with an impartial eye.
Making fundamental changes in the way a business operates has to be carefully planned and implemented within a well-tried and tested operational procedure. Because LiG is very familiar with these transformation projects they can save you a lot of time and money.
Changes will probably involve either or all of the personnel, processes and technology of the establishment so there needs to be a full evaluation of the financial and time implications before any work begins.
Rescuing a Business Transformation
If you have already started a business transformation programme but it has run into difficulties, LiG can draft in a team to assess the situation, identify the problem, resolve and stabilise it and manage the transformation to a satisfactory conclusion.
In summary
High street and retail park shopping is stabilizing at about 75% of the total and on-line shopping is averaging out at 25%.
However, a larger proportion, 33%, of the Christmas shopping, is taken by on-line.
Consequently, ordering systems, picking and packing and distribution need to be automated and linked so that the business can keep up with the demand for rapid delivery during those peak periods.
